Jürgen's surftips

To have a good time in the water and to avoid stressy situations we all should check out and follow a few simple rules.

surfing

  • As a beginner never venture out at those spots that are known to suit advanced surfers better. If you do you may get hurt or hurt someone else.
  • Always try to keep hold of your board, especially if someone is surfing towards you or behind you in the water, If you can't do this you probably do not belong there.
  • Always respect the rules : first to his feet has right of way, if 2 or more take off on the same wave then the surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has possession. The others should kick out straight away, or better still not even take off.
  • If you ride a Longboard, don't be greedy, let the shortboarders have their share too.
  • Treat the local surfers with respect, have a relaxed attitude.
  • Don't go to spots in big groups. Nobody is too excited when group X arrives and 20 surfers paddle out at once, crowding out the rest.
  • Do not paddle around surfers on the peak who have been waiting longer than you. Have a little patience and respect for you fellow surfers.

windsurfing
  • If there are more than 5 surfers (without sails) out on a peak, for instance summertime at Glass Beach, you should wait until most have left the water as they will when the wind increases. Alternatively check out another spot.
  • Always keep a good distance away from other water users, especially surfers.
  • Surfers relying on paddle power have right of way.
  • If 2 or more windsurfers are on the same wave then the guy who caught the wave first has right of way. If they took off together then the rider with the inside position has right of way. If you are on the outside, get off the wave as quick as possible.
  • Never overtake a wave from the back, you will have no idea if there is someone in front of it.
  • Look around before you jibe.

kitesurfing
  • Kitesurfing is a new exciting sport.
When learning make sure that, at all times, you keep your distance from other beach and water users.
  • The thin lines can be a dangerous weapons and you do not want a 3rd party paying for you mistakes. Try and choose a time of day (later in the evening) that is less crowded and think about using a less crowded beach.
  • To start with you will get the best results through a kitesurfing school.

This might all sound a little bureaucratic or heavy handed, but with a little care we can preserve the harmony and relaxed atmosphere of Fuerteventura's beaches. This way we will all have a good time.
